Rhenium

Rhenium is dense silver-white metal and, concurrently, last element in which stable isotope is found. After this particle was not found even in artificially derived chemical elements.

General characteristics

Rhenium is widely used metal despite its rarity. This is motivated by fact that metal has extreme characteristics:

  • Corrosion resistance;
  • Plasticity;
  • Heat resistance;
  • Refractoriness (melting point 3180 °C);
  • Strength;
  • Weldability and oxidation resistance.

At same time, specific electrical resistance of rhenium is 4 times higher than that of molybdenum or tungsten. Such properties make it possible to use metal and alloys from it in different fields.

Application area

Scope of use of rhenium is wide. Among areas of use distinguish:

  • Construction of rocket technology and supersonic aviation;
  • Pens;
  • Details of precision instruments;
  • Mass spectrometers, ion manometers and cathodes;
  • For create marketable gasoline;
  • Electrical contacts and others.

From since discovery of metal, use of rhenium has grown significantly. But, nevertheless, still majority of stocks are used for manufacture of other alloys. In everyday life you can buy rhenium and rhenium alloys in form of ingots, plates, wire and other types.
